A young black girl is brutally raped in Clanton Mississippi. They know who did it, and have no problem catching the beasts, but they didn't count on her father. Carl Lee, not trusting that justice will be done, especially with the condition of his little girl critical, takes matters into his own hands, and kills the beasts as they leave the courtroom. In a county where it's still black verse white, lawyer Jake Brigance is going to have to do everything he can to keep his client alive from the KKK and himself and his family out of harms way.
